She is about 6 months old. Looks perfectly healthy. Moves around, eats and seems normal...........until She starts the LOUD, LOUD screeching. If a hen could SCREAM.......this would be the sound.

She started this yesterday late morning and did it again today early afternoon. She was jumping in and out of nesting boxes when she did this.

Yesterday I checked and I think she laid a large egg. No blood or anything......just large for her. She usually lays a medium. Now today she was screeching again in the early afternoon inside the coop again. I didn't find an egg today.

She looks like the picture of health but the sound she is making is very disturbing to me because I think it indicates much pain.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Mary

I don't know what to tell you. I know it's disturbing. My hen is doing something similar. Only mine won't eat. I sure hope someone has an answer!

I'm not an expert, but the one time i heard my chickens scream was when they were being attacked by predators (i figured out later), and i swore i would never ignore that sound again.

It's my opinion that if your chicken is making that awful chicken scream when she's laying that she's definitely in pain, and you need to try to intervene or see what the problem is.

Again, i'm no expert.

I think it's always a good idea to put a chicken in a warm bath if there seems to be any distress with the egg laying......and then get some more specific advice from the more experienced chicken masters around here.

I would do a search on egg binding or pm three horses or speckledhen if you don't get some more specific answers quickly.

All the best to you and your beautiful birds.

Have you looked at her backside closely? Any signs of prolapse? You can also feel her belly (from behind, just between her legs) to see if it appears swollen. This could help identify if she's having egg problems.

Where's threehorses when we need her?

Julie...thanks for asking. She hasn't done it yesterday or today that I am aware of. I picked her up and her tummy is soft and supple. Her feathers look great. I wonder if she's broody.

She looks like the picture of health.......wondering what that was about and if she'll start up again.

I don't think any of my hens screech like that, but 2 of my little roosters do it quite often (1 Silkie and 1 Sizzle). They know how to crow, and crow every day, but sometimes they let out this weird scream and I don't know why. They are not being attacked...not by a predator or any other chicken. They just screech. Maybe some chickens just do that...

i was wondering myself if she was broody thats the first thing that came to mind..

the first time i heard mine scream "get out of my nesting area" (in chickenze of course) i was so afraid i thought she was gonna attack me then DD made me look like a fool and reached under her for the egg
