Why is my mini horse occasionally dragging his hind hoof?

thanks to everyone for the in-depth responses. When someone or something around here is hurt/sick, I'm the chief medical evaluator/whatever. And I'm the type to overanalyze and worry about a hangnail.

But I really don't want to be the type to call the vet over a hangnail, kwim?

His 'stuff' has dropped - the vet felt him up when he was here a month ago for the worming. He actually said to get it done sooner than later, since the horse is a grooming pet for my 5 and 2 y/os, before he gets studdy. He definitely won't be doing any heavy work - my 2 y/o may be able to actually ride him in a few years if we can get him to that point, but the older one will probably be too big by then.

As far as the stifle thing - when he was doing it yesterday (hasn't done it at all today), I picked up his feet to clean them out and after I did that, it seemed to help. Then, as he was walking around, he seemed to favor that foot slightly when he put weight on it. Like, he'd lift it up a bit after stepping off of it. That was at 8 am feeding. Then at noon, we went out to see what was up at the barn, and he was possibly dragging/just not walking around on it, really. He just sort of stood in one spot and walked his front feet out so he wouldn't have move the back one. I was in the car so I didn't try to walk him around. Then, at evening, he was walking around normally.

Definitely not hoping for big $$ surgery - he is a grade mini that I bought without knowing what I was doing for $100, and he had a major case of worms. The previous owner told me not to worm him for several months b/c he'd just done it. moron. Don't worry, I'm on a vet-recommended worm schedule now.

Anyway - that's the background on Minty. I'll sleep better, not wondering if he's out there suffering seriously from this, or if I'm gonna be walking out to a disaster at feeding time. Thanks again for all the responses.

I would not be too worried. Even your farrier can tell you if it is a stifle issue. You can try some joint supplements, they might help "lube" it a little more. Used to help in my girls barrel horses.

Ditto! My Andy mare does this, she is 2 1/2y, the vet said it was her growth spurts and not to do anything, but hill work and backing to strengthen. If after she finishes growing and it still is a problem, re-evaluate then. I find that keeping her out 24/7 instead of locked in a stall helps tremendously.
