We live in a 2 story house on the main road, with many cars that go by every day. 2 chickens showed up in our yard and one would crow very very loudly and it made my brother-in-law mad. My brother-in-law went out and shot of the the chickens, the chicken he thought was crowing. Come to find out he shot the wrong one, we were all upset that he shot the chicken in the first place. But now this rooster is alone and scared. He started charging us and attacking us so we picked him up and carried him around with us and then out him down occasionally. We then thought maybe we should get him some hens so we raised some hens for him to have. All he does is harasses the hens and still attacks us. The hens wont run around him, they have to fly to the corner of the yard and then fly to us. He has the hens so scared.

My mother-in-law has had enough and she says get rid of him or kill him. We do not want to get rid of him because he is a beautiful chicken and he was our first chicken. We just want to know what kind of rooster he is and how we should go about getting him nicer.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Wow, he sure is a beauty! But some roosters are mean. It is their job to protect their harems of hens and you pose a threat as far as he is concerned. Not all roosters are mean, but many of them are.

It is not easy to change their personalities however there are threads on this here on BYC. I know of a lady that kept her mean boy and he did change his attitude and she loves him to pieces now. If a bird is scared, he will retaliate. But please be careful as they can gravely injure you especially the little kids.

Here is a thread on dealing with mean roosters. There are many others if you do a search in our archives (at the top of this page) ...https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/944986/questions-and-a-mean-rooster

I don't know his breed but you can post a pic of him in our What Breed and Gender section for a positive ID...https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this

Good luck! Very pretty bird! :-)

Welcome to BYC! I'm glad you joined us! :) You have an Easter Egger rooster. The majority of roosters get mean to their owners. I've had dozens of roosters and only 2 haven't been mean.

As long as you have him it's like harboring a vicious dog. If he severely attacks someone out of your family they might try suing you. Especially if it gets out that you knew he was nasty.

There is never a good reason to keep a bad rooster.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. You have an Easter Egger rooster. In my 50 years experience in raising chickens, I've found that it's nearly impossible to break an aggressive rooster; and as drumstick diva said, there's no good reason to keep a bad rooster. You don't want to risk him injuring someone, nor do you want to breed that kind of aggression into your flock. There are loads of unwanted rooster waiting to be re-homed and you should be able to pick up a good one easily enough. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your rooster.

Welcome to BYC, glad you joined the flock!

You have a very handsome Easter Egger rooster. I currently have an aggressive rooster, and he is very mean to anyone who comes into his area gets attacked, unless you have a water gun in your hand. I am trying to get him a bit nicer, but sadly I am failing. I would advise to just sell your rooster.
