Why is my rooster such a wimp?

My RIR rooster is now 7 months old, he's been here since hatch. He is the biggest wimp of a rooster I ever had. He has not overtaken any of my hens, not even my little silkie cross that is less than half his size. He runs literally screaming his head off everytime the hens chase him away, let alone try to mate them. He has not started crowing either. His last hatch mate went a couple of weeks ago so he is a bit of a loner now, in a flock of about 15 hens.

Granted there is a an older Light sussex roo ruling the roost in this flock, but the older rooster is a calm and peacful chap, never bullies the RIR like the hens.

So why is my RIR such a wimp? Will he grow out of it? I would have thought he would have tried to at least start trying to overtake the hens by now, or at least started crowing or something roosterish, especailly considering RIRs are faster maturing than most other DP breeds.

Oh and before anyone asks, yes he is 100% a rooster.

I had a black tailed red Polish roo do EXACTLY the same thing. He never tried anything with my hens...scardest thing ever. Wouldn't get ahead of the hens, stayed at the bottom of the pecking order for his whole life. Only got up the courage to mate one hen one time. One of the eggs hatched, and the chick is now the bravest roo ever..I dunno what Henry's deal was...and yeah, he was definitely a rooster too

Oh no, that doesn't sound too healthy. I was hoping for this RIR to replace the LS roo. I will have to hold on now to the LS until one of my other chicks have grown up. I will probably give the RIR up to around 9 months old to man up. He looks just like your scardey roo (obviously being a RIR he would), without the polish hairdo of course.

I'm guessing all the hens are older? I think you're talking about putting a teenage boy in a room of 30ish women and expecting him to be the boss of them. Just ain't gonna happen yet. Give him time.

....plus there's another rooster around,
take the older rooster out of the mix (put him in a separate enclosure, out of sight) and you may see things change after a week or few.

I guess some roosters just mature later then. It's just that all my previous roosters have been trying to tread girls, do the wing dance, crow etc by about 6 months. This is the first that is still so scared at 7 months.
