Why is rooster crowing at 3:55 am?

I have had multiple roo's for a couple of decades (not the same ones the whole time, obviously!) I learned a long time ago that I could almost tell the time at night by the roosters' crowing. At about midnight, one or more would crow, but just every once in a while. Around two a.m, they'd pick it up a notch. Around 4, they'd do it a bit more often. By the time the sun rose (6ish), the crowing would be just about continuous.

Fortunately, they do take breaks during the day.
