This is Cooper, a crested Cayuga x Khaki Campbell-Cayuga mixed duckling. She's 2 weeks old.

Her 2 hatch mates are not crested (mom is crested). Ever since they hatched, the other 2 have been growing at a typical pace. Cooper has stayed small and is a bit chunky shaped. She's almost half their size. However, she has always acted and eaten normally.

Underneath her crest, it feels as if her skull has not fully closed. The soft spot feels as if it's getting smaller though.

What is going on? Is this normal?

It could be a runt. Thats what I would hope. Because the other choices are'nt pretty. Plus you never know with crested genes in the mix. Enjoy him and see what happens.

What do you mean about the other choices?

(Insert anxiety here.) Other than the soft spot on her head and her size, she acts normal.

Underdeveloped organs and the like. Hey think positive not negative.

When will I know if she has health problems? Will I need to keep her separated from the other ducks, chickens, and geese? Am I looking at a 24/7 indoor duck?

A lot of crested ducks have a hole in their skull where the crest is. I wouldn't worry too much about that, although I have no explanation for why she's so little.
