why mama hen not protecting chicks

I have two 3 days old chicks. She took the chicks out the nest yesterday. When other hen get close, she puff up but let the other hen pick her chicks. She did not stop the other hen.
I thought she suppose to protect her chicks at any cost. Is that normal?

Some mom's are real slackers. Can you keep her and the chicks separated for a few weeks? Other hens can kill the babies.

definately keep them seperated from the others.some hens are very protective and others are not.she sounds like she is a not.regardless of how protective the hens are they can't protect all the chicks at the same time.i keep mine seperate until the hen starts laying again.then i take the babies to there grow out pen and put the mom back into the flock.
