so i'm feeding organic, but the brand I have contains soy. I found a mill the does organic non soy, but also one that has no corn too. I understand the no soy, but what's the big deal with corn these days. I believe it is non GMO corn, but still? And I know why you wouldn't want TOO much corn, but the amount in layer feed doesn't cause obesity in my flock. Just trying to figure out which one to get before I make the trip to pick it up.
Thanks in advance

corn is becoming more and more a poorer source of protein and nutrients. Along with drought and open pollination in the corn industry it contains very little usable nutrition for feeding animals. Basically like giving your chickens or poultry candy all the time. I would stick with the soy to be honest but thats just my opinion. Also oats and barley are good sources for low fat protein.

. I am wondering about wheat though. the layer ration they have that is soy and corn free has wheat as its first ingredient. If anyone knows about if that's a better choice, I'd appreciate it. then i'm worried that I'll buy for a couple months supply, and my hens won't like this "no corn no soy" ration LOL!

the best thing to do would be to buy whole ingredients and mix you own so its not just one main ingredient there are plenty of articles and books with base values listed in them. That way you can buy organic ingredients and mix to specifications for what purpose it needs to serve. in the long run its going to cost the same or less and you can be more specific this way.

oats, barley, wheat, corn, soy, mineral base and a stock vitamin. 50 lbs of each mixed together is a lot of feed.

Corn is not used as source of Protein in livestock rations, it is a source of carbohydrates to be used as a energy source in the animal. It is not simply "candy" unless you feed the corn without properly balancing a ration.

I agree with lazy j, I just stated the corn and protein content because a lot of people believe corn is for protein and some even think corn alone is enough. But totally agree, corn is indeed carbs with little protein.
