why no eggs?(update and contest)

Get a few round white things like golf balls, or buy a dozen eggs, mark them and put them in the nests. Maybe they just forgot what they do, this should remind them.

Let me tell you what we been going thru .

Dh bought 6 hens ( RIR'S ) in April . 3 were laying and 3 others were about to start . ( so we were told )

WELL , needless to say , they were all the same sizes , all the same breed and the 3 are just starting to lay now . and I mean within the last couple of days .

What signs are the hens giving you ?

Mine started squating , combs and wattles getting bigger and RED , and the roosters started mating with them . ALL this has happened in the last 2 weeks .

Out of no where my 30 week old silkie began nesting this morning when I gave her fresh straw. She never bothered with it before. Last night she was squatting while I was petting her. Never did that before. Within 30 minutes of the time I gave her fresh straw there was her first egg. Her signs just started like that and POOF. When I was watching her nest I assumed it would happen within days but it was only minutes.

Sometimes it might just sneak up on them!

I read somewhere here someone with a silkie was still waiting at 38 weeks!

You are not feeding them lots of peanuts are you? Peanuts Link

anything is fine to feed them as treats , ( except no potato peelings , no onions , no garlic ) as long as they get their laying pellets .

I give mine garlic because its good for their immune system. I read it on the internet(Scroll to the bottom) so it must be true!

As for the Onions I just read not to give them too much or the flavor would be passed on to their eggs, same with the Garlic.

I just read a post a few mins ago from someone who says they give their chickens potatoes and their peels all the time with no troubles.

Their roos want them (an try) but most of them scream and run. A few are being mated and let them. Their combs and wattles getting bigger and redder than they have been.I have stopped letting my kids go up there and i just go to feed and water. Maybe we bother them.My white silkies (who just started laying ) are now in a molt white feathers all over the place. I have not seen any from the other birds yet.I do not feed them peanuts Just their layer pellets some scratch and sometimes our leftovers. I put some oyster shell in a week ago but they have not touched it.

I need eggs!!!

My BO's are now 26 weeks and only 1 of them is laying. I have 2 BR's who are 10 months and they lay pretty much everyday. The BR's lay in the nesting box but the 1 BO lays on the floor of the coop. So I can't figure out why either. I am just going to let nature take its course and wait. I also don't know how to make the 1 BO go in the nesting box. I have never seen her in there. Should I pick her up and put her in the box?

I would do that several times until she gets the idea . Also , put 2 golfballs in each nesting box .
Are your BO's all on laying pellets ? I started all of mine on laying pellets at 18 weeks old .
