Why quail.

I should answer a question with a question. Yes, I know it's rude.

Why do people like golf?
It seams wasteful and pointless to me, but aparently it makes people money, or they enjoy it.

Some kind of response from the OP, would be greatly appreciated!

Even a/an "thanks for 10-30 min. out of your life to post a reply" would be something.

I'm holding my breath....turning blue....Tina Turner is leading the asparagus guild, and taking over the Crystal Palace from the Snake Lords.....

Breathing now....

Why does anyone do anything?

I have coturnix for eggs mainly... I havent been brave enough to process although I'd love to try the meat sometime. Not sure I'd call them roaches though... the only comparison may be that they are prolific but other than that I cant see the comparison?

The only thing I'd say about button's is that they are NOT QUIET!
I got rid of mine because their crowing or noises came at all hours and they kept waking me and my neighbors up in the middle of the night. Even when it was pitch black they still made noise. Cute but noisy little buggers .... and i had a pair so they werent calling for a mate..

On an acre of land, you can safely raise a steer for consumption...

On the same acre, you can raise around 100-200 chickens...

Also on the same acre you can raise ~10,000 quail...

If your steer gets sick or breaks the fence you've lost all your time & investment.

If chickens get loose or die (or a &$#^$ varmit gets in) you can loose 20-30% over night. Not a complete loss, but still not good for your pocket.

* I keep my quail in cages *

I could loose 10% to random occurances (head stuck in egg slot, sicknessk, etc ) in this scenario and stil come out WAY AHEAD!

(I personally don't believe the economy is recovering and that things will continue to get much worse for a long time to come....pm me if you want to rant about this part).

The thing I personally like about quail is that to me they are like pocket change. Any live stock is a commodity that at some point will be either eaten or sold to make a profit....I view them as live stock and mean no disrespect to those of you that keep them as pets! To sell the above steer, you must find someone with the means to either purchase it or barter for it. The same with the chickens, but instead of hundreds of dollars from one person, you can take tens from several. When it comes to quail, you can take ones from MANY MORE without placing a large burden on any single individual. In a barter system I believe small pieces are the way to go. I can always add more small pieces, but it'd be hard to trade 1 1/2 chickens or 20 lbs of beef to an individual.

But that's just my opinion...

Great point that I never thought of! We have the quail for multiple purposes but I never thought of them in comparison with other meat producers/egg suppliers. Very interesting post Fitzy! Kristi

Only one SA that I'm aware of. Sorry if I offended you.

Something that I haven't seen mentioned is the silly low dollar amount needed to spin up a small quail project (10-25 birds) compared to a chicken project, or other animal.

I think that is why I raise quail..
