Why rent a banner?

OK, I am a little confused. I was just at the BYC Store when I see "Banner Rental" . They are renting a banner that says, "BACKYARDCHICKENS.COM" on it to use at any event that you might go to. I was thinking to myself,"Shouldn't that be the other way? Shouldn't they be paying me to advertise for them?"

Am I missing something? I love this site, and the people how run it seem really nice, but...

OP..a lot of folks on this forum have what they call chicken stocks..(something like that)
Where local people get together and camp out and swap/sell birds and just have a fun party..
so they use the banner..

Correct. You are only paying for postage and the $15 is the absolute most you will pay. Once I send the banner out, I note the actual cost of the postage and will refund all but that amount.
Unfortunately we had to do this due to banners being lost or not returned or whatever. We used to have 4 or 5 of these expensive banners and we were sending them out on request, but now we only have 2.
