Why so many chicks??

I want to order more chicks but I think it's ridiculous that I have to order way more than I need. All I want is 4 hens and a rooster.....yet the hatcheries force you to order at least 15. What are you supposed to do with the rest?? Why insist on such a minimum??

The chicks keep each other warm inside the box...and you have to pack them in or they will scoot around and end up hurt during shipping. Mypetchicken.com has a minimum of 3 chicks...but their shipping is more expensive. You can always order the minimum of 15 and then turn around and resell the rest once you get them.

You can also find someone near you to go in on the order with you. it saves both people on shipping and nobody has to get more chickens than they want.

some of them offer a smaller amount. I know some offer a city-town special where you can order a min of 3 or so. Check out cacklehatchery and meyerhatchery. The other option is to see if anyone else you know wants some and then you split the larger order.

My Pet Chicken allows you to order fewer chickens, depending on where you live. I can order five, which is what I did and then later ordered 5 more. Tell them your zip code and they will tell you what your minimum number is. There are a few other hatcheries that will do the same. I have been very happy with my chickens from My Pet Chicken and they have a good variety.

I split my order with a friend I didn't have the room or money for 15 to 25 chicks.
