I notice that most people who have runs have no grass- but mostly what looks like sand. Why is this? My chickens are more free rangers during the day- so they do not have a "run"- but I am wondering why? And when we put them up in the new coop all winter should we have a section for sand?

Thanks

Sand drains well and helps lots of people avoid the stinky mud pit run.

I recently started using sand in my Serama Hutch, and I haven't noticed the smell anymore, and when they lay their eggs in it, it doesn't get them all coated in ___ like when I used shavings. A+++ on the San!

Chickens love to bathe in the sand. The land where I live is all sand. One thing for sure it drains well.
