Why was there a tomato in the nest box?

I went out this morning to get the egg from my sole layer. I found an egg... and an egg-sized tomato. The hen, a seven-month-old light sussex, was not sitting on either. Um... why? Does broodiness factor into this at all?

We have had Dominique hens "steal" eggs from neighboring nesting boxes but no produce. Does she have access to tomatoes? It is quite amazing to watch a hen roll an egg around with their beaks and necks. Or you have an amazing chicken that lays eggs AND tomatoes!

I tossed a tomato in the run a few days ago, because they seem to enjoy pecking at them. But... why the nest box?

You could make a fortune on Craigslist, a chicken that lays tomato's!

(anyone want a tomato sandwich now or is that just me?)
