Why do silkie chickens have fuzzy feathers and five toes?

As per Wikipedia, according to their genetics: "Their feathers lack functioning barbicels, and are thus similar to down on other birds and leave Silkies unable to fly." Genetics also explains the five toes - someone like bred for it like they did for the Dorking, Faverolles, and Sultan breeds.
