I'm a farm girl from way back, but never had chickens growing up. We wanted to get into agriculture a bit (just truck farm stuff) and thought chickens would be a great addition. While I would have initially been more comfortable with beef animals, chickens were an inexpensive way to get started. Also, I wanted to make a difference in a small way, and while there are rules about what's cruel to a cow, chickens aren't classed as "animals;" instead they are products, and can be treated any way you want to, including killing them all by dumping them alive into a hole in the ground and covering it up. I guess I felt badly for them.
Now that we have them, I think I'll always have chickens, even if it's just two or three once my children are grown and gone. I just like watching them. And the egg money pays not only for every aspect of the chickens including bedding, feed, electricity, repairs, etc, but it makes a profit. So for us eggs are free. Plus, they taste good!
