I've become a slave to our wild bird population.

Every year a swallow makes her nest under the eaves of our carport. No big deal, we try to be quiet in that area and we park the cars in the yard, unless we're expecting hail. Last year a black snake climbed up there and ate her chicks. We caught him in the act. I was so upset. Mr. Black Snake is no longer on this earth. I may be a soft heart for all animals, but DH is not me.

For the past (I think) 3 years a wren has made her nest in the framework of the people door on one of my coops. The door is a double/split door similiar to a barn stall. She makes her nest in the upper half of the door. Last year she abandoned the nest. There was alot going on in that coop last spring and I guess she finally gave up nesting there.

This year, she's back. Laid 4 eggs. She's now setting. I'm am trying to be as careful and quiet around the coop as possible, but it is kind of inconvenient. I'm only checking for eggs once a day, so I don't have to keep opening the people door. I feel like an idiot doing it, but I knock on the door before entering so she has time to fly up into the rafters. If I have to open the door in the evenings, I leave it open just a crack for awhile, so if she flies off, she has time and enough light to return to her nest.

I'm not worried about mites. I've never had a problem with them. Whatever diseases she might be carrying I'm sure my birds have already been exposed to, since they free range and often share forage areas with wild birds.

My question is this - if she's having to fly off the nest a couple times a day due to human presence, are her eggs likely to hatch? Or am I taking all these precautions for nothing?

i am amazed at what willhatch even if the bird is off the nest for awhile.Chickens always get a break at least once a day from the eggs.So I think your wren should be fine.

yes they will still hatch, unless she get tired of you. Good thing wren eggs hatch fast and the young will be gone in just a few weeks....

I agree, they will hatch. We have a Robin that nest every year on our patio. Every time we open the door to go outside she flies off. I think she likes this spot cause even though she's afraid of us, she must know we keep the other birds away.

Thanks y'all. I think Mama Wren picks this spot each year because food and water are handy, within a few feet and she uses hay from my nestboxes to build her nest.

We'll be gone, but I'll remind my stepdaughter to be careful around the coop.

The best thing about wrens is what they FEED the babies! I didn't know this until one year we had a baby wren crash land in our backyard on his/her "maiden flight". The parents were flying around scolding and chirping, but the baby just wasn't quite ready yet. I put it in a little transport cage I used for show parakeets and put him out under the patio cover at dawn everyday, brought him in night. The parents continued to feed thru the bars every 20-30 minutes. Every evening when I went to bring him in..... WASP BUTTS all over the floor of the cage. I don't know if the parents nipped off the stinger/butt part, or if baby did it, but there were always 30-40 red wasp, yellojacket, wall wasp, every kind of wasp you can find's butt ends on the cage floor. I REALLY liked wrens after that!

I knew someone who had a killdeer nest pretty much right outside their back door. They did perfectly fine and all the babies hatched, but they left the nest as soon as possible.
