This is my first post. I live in Waipahu, HI and found a black chicken laying eggs in a potted plant. I took 5 to see if they are feriziled but she has been in the same area for about 2 weeks never moving or making any noise. I can get close enough to grab eggs and give her water and food. But I have no idea what breed it is or how I can tame it into laying for me.
Do you have the ability to provide a secure coup for her? She is exposed to predators out in the open. There are lots of threads here about secure coups, nesting boxes.
Welcome!
She looks a little like an Australorp, and she needs a secure home. What are your plans? and PS; Do you already have other chickens? [Man! I read about this happening to people all the time! Boy I wish it would happen to me! ]
Not an Austrolope, looks like she has a white egg there. Also are her earlobes white? There are other black chicken breeds and in HI there are lots of feral chickens so likely a mix. Though she doesn't look like the typical feral chicken. If you want her to stick around and lay you eggs your best bet is to make a safe coop and run for her, otherwise she may end up leaving once she is done brooding.
Agree with @annageckos get her a coop, if you want to keep her, and a secured run. And I also agree that she's not an austrolorp, not with white ears and white eggs. She's probably a mix.
She looks like a Black Minorca, but full body pictures would help confirm that. If you do end up keeping her and getting her a secure coop/run, I highly recommend getting her some flock mates as chickens are extremely social animals. From what you described, it sounds like she's broody. But of course, if the eggs aren't fertile, there's no point in her sitting on them, so I would just keep collecting them and her broodiness should rub off in a little while. Are you feeding her at all? Or giving her water? Giving her treats would help get her warmed up towards people.
I once had a male guinea fowl show up at my house pacing and trying to get in with my chickens. So I let him in and it didn't take long for me to discover what a big bully he was. He went strutting around the run trying to look big and impressive to scare my hens. I had to get rid of him, because he was terrorizing my chickens. But I was still sad to get rid of him, yes, he was mean, but he was also very entertaining, lol. Good luck with your new chicken.
Welcome to BYC....if she's not moving, she's going to hatch those eggs! Now is the time to get her and her nest into safe quarters if you want to keep them....
Good luck, let us know how it goes!
