I recently started a coop and got 4 hens and a rooster from a friend. These chickens had complete free run of the place and just roosted in a barn. I have them in my coop with a fenced run. My problem is i cant even approach them without them going crazy. Is there any chance that they can be tamed or should the be dinner?

What type of chicken are they? Becouse some breeds are normally more friendlier then others.

I'm reading "Animals Make Us Human" by Temple Grandin about a variety of captive animals.. including chickens. The impression I get is hurrying animals to learn anything faster than their own pace doesn't work. They need a lot of time to look things over and decide if you warrant their trust. try being the guy who brings grapes and corn; sit nearby and read the book and they should come around. : )

Food is the greatest tool in taming any animal. Stop full feeding these birds, and only feed small amounts while you are present. Once they come to associate you with food, they should tame down somewhat. Most likely they will not become extremely tame, but patience can work wonders.

thank you for all the tips...will work towards getting their respect with food!

Try find out what are their favorite treats. By add things that are safe for them to eat.
And apporach them slowly when you service them, talk to them all the time while you are there so they can get used to your voice.

Good Luck and keep us updated on your progress.
