Finches and Budgies will do 1 - 4 batches in a normal season. This varies due to
1. fertility - if they don;t hatch go again.
2. loss of chicks - if they all die or get killed go again.
3. good or bad season - sneak more into a good season

I was more curious if you had ever noticed an Emu pair do the cock vanishes, reappears without chicks, vanishes again, reappears with chicks thing.

This year is exciting (if observing emus is your thang) because we've never had so much data.

Cheeper Report

They are turning brown. I doubt if they can all still fit under Dad at night. Getting data on emus at roost is very very very hard.



Limpy Chick and the kids have several times of late turned up just once a day. This suggests that they are too far away in the afternoons to pop back for wheat. So they are covering larger distances – but this is surmise.

Nice Datum from Bush and Haystack at dusk last night:

We were observing at dusk -- which means it's practically spring.

Bush and Haystack finished their wheat, and drifted off into the bush on the south west corner. Then we heard a series of calls. It just must be Haystack: 7-9 nice classic single calls each time.

I hope you are going to write a book/paper - it may seem like no one might be interested - but having a daughter who is an environmental scientist - I can assure you - that there are some out there who love to have more information to help with reports on where not to/to do developments.
