Wild Emus at The Lilly Pilly Tree

Is B.B. the sandy chick? What a great question.

Prolly not. That sighting -- the dates are on the thread -- was a long time ago. (But Stinky Creek is a hop skip and jump away in emu travel terms)

Off to town. Photos later. B.B. and U.E. were 'operating' together against Limpy Chick and Co. yesterday

'I think you might have yourself some new tame-wild emus!'

Are Undersized and Brash going to be a breeding-pair? It sure looks that way -- and it's always hilarious watching the new/wild bird trying to figure out why the 'here' emu isn't scared of Supreme Emu.

B.B. has had a dozen feeds of wheat. He likes it. He gets closer every time.

Here are two clips with the technological marvel of stop/start.

So, in the truly rooley wild, readers, there’s be less pressure: the fact of the wheat does make things a little lopsided. (Primatologists discuss this problem as ‘provisioning.’)

However, the plums and figs and grapes here do the same thing.

Undersized Emu has retreated to the shadows behind Brash Boy. She did the initial fussing, then made a strategic retreat.

Now, readers have been asking ‘Will B.B. and U.E. become a pair?!’ Well, as we understand it – certainly this early in the breeding-season – this is exactly what ‘being a pair’ looks like.

The point here is not that they are losing. The point is that they are trying. Brash Boy has never seen the house-clearing (or wheat . . . ) until ten days ago, now he’s trying, with U.E., to ‘command’ it (and good luck with that against a Dad with chicks, a Dad who grow up here).

'It is probable that Brash is the son of that previous dilute emu, and some other distantly related bird with the recessive gene.'

Well, we welcome all conjectures. So now, we wait to see if Supreme Emu is ever able to get the data to prove this one.

B.B. and Undersized really now looking like a breeding-pair. He comes closer each day, so we get better looks at him.

It's interesting how fast the 'model' is set. Undersized Emu just can't resist foomphing at Limpy Chick, which gets her chased all over the house-clearing. B.B. stays in the background -- except when he can't resist gurking at Limpy Chick, which gets him chased off. Rinse and repeat.

And the chicks are getting big!
