Apache moved aside and let Flowers go on her way. His head down, he trotted back to the newborn and stood a few feet away, keeping guard. If he was fortunate, another lactating mare would stumble upon his little herd. Flowers certainly wasn't going to care for the foal properly.
Flowers came to a stop near the creek bed. Her coat was stained with sweat and dust. She whinnied hoping Apache would come to her.

Coal patroled his borders, whinnying every so often. His whinny had two purposes, to warn off other studs and attract mares.
Zelda glanced up at Coal. She didn't expect anyone to answer, not many horses would choose to live in the mountains, when the valley was within sight.

Flowers stood still,a waiting the unfamiliar feeling of the foal nursing.

(Much longer without nusing the filly will die, and Flowers won't have to worry about it)

Apache stood nearby, eyeing Flowers coolly. "Having a foal was your idea, Flowers," he stated bluntly. "You have. Now, take care of her."

The urge to nurse strong, the filly once again approached her dam and latched tenderly onto a teat.

"It's wierd, Apache!" She snapped, and flinched as the filly nursed.

Apache pawed angrily, as if daring Flowers to kick the filly away again. "That doesn't matter!"

This time, Flowers stood long enough for the newborn to fill up on that very important first milk. Releasing her dam's teat, she stood at her side, eyelids drooping.
