Two mares grazed side-by-side just outside the edge of a forest. Both duns, they were nearly identical, but closer inspection revealed one was darker. They could hear the sounds of distant horses, but neither had made a move to investigate. They had grown accustomed to being alone, but occasionally, they missed companionship of other horses.

Diablo was getting a drink with his harem of mares at a nearby watering hole. The lead mare of the group, a palomino the stallion called Winona, grazed on its grassy banks as her small black foal nursed.

One of the mares, the darker, Sundance raised her head, blowing and snorting. Horses were closer to them now than they were before. Beside her, the other mare continued munching, less interested about the strangers.

Diablo's head shot up into the air. His mares' ears began to twitch, and Bandito was sure to snuggle under his dam's bulk.

Sundance's repetitive snorting finally brought Windstar's head up. Still chewing peacefully, she turned her head in the direction her twin was facing. The wind brought the scent of Diablo and his herd to her. Slower to act, Windstar ignored Sundance a few more minutes then joined her in blowing and snorting. They hadn't met another horse in a long time.

Diablo snorted, and moved closer to the horses. Once he could see them, he breathed a sigh of relief, for he had realized they were mares. He whinnied to them.

Sundance and Windstar stopped their snorting when Diablo came into view. So far, all they could see was him, and they stared for several minutes before Sundance answered with an eager whinny. Not just another horse but a stallion. Windstar didn't answer back; she only kept her eyes on Diablo, her ears swiveling to hear everything.

Diablo's mares came up behind him, Diablo tagging along. The stud stood still for a few minutes, simply staring at the strange mares. Finally, he let out a snort and moved closer, his head down.

Sundance tossed her head, causing Windstar to shy sides out of the way. Approaching Diablo, Sundance kept her head down; behind her, her tail swished uncertainly. Windstar had yet to move again.
