I’m still trying to make some decisions on ducks. I think I’m set with 6, the space for a nice large run and house, only females but I’m trying to decide if I want to get all the same, white and dawn runners, runner mix, 3 pairs of different typea of ducks or just order a mix of female ducks and leave to fate and th hatchery. I thought a mix might be fun for my girls. Anywho I wanted to share a picture of the wild mallards that make my back yard one of their regular hang outs since I don’t have any ducks of my own yet.

If you get all girls you still might end up with fertile eggs if wild mallard drakes come calling!
As for your question, it is easier if each duck is unique. It makes it easier to tell who is who and determine their personalities. I also think similar sized ducks are better as far as pecking order is concerned. So, I like your mix of runners or if you choose different breeds of similar sizes.

Good advice on the sizes, didn’t think about that.
I am worried about the wild mallards too, I’m sure at some point it may happen. Our poor lady mallard that hangs out here has been very popular this week will all the drakes. We have wood ducks too but they are much more shy and don’t usually come into or yard, just hang on my dock looking pretty. I’m planning to do a pretty large enclosed area for them, let them about to roam when I’m here and can keep an eye on them.

Live a little! Let them mix it up for you. You will love them either way!! Lol
