wildest breed?

What would be the best breed to leave out in the wild. My dad wants to increase the population on his land. He will always a have food and water available but wantsthem to roam free. And will anyone have any around central il this spring?

It would be very unwise to release domestic turkeys into the wild and more than likely illegal. The best way to assure a good population of wild turkeys is to provide the proper habitat they need.

Hes got a couple that hang around his back yard. He just wants to add a few more. He thinks theyre all female tho. He just wants a cpl to get them breeding again. He feeds them. Theyre more domestic than wild.

I strongly agree with TV. Please do not introduce domestic birds for breeding in the wild. It ultimately will reduce the fitness of the wild birds. If there are some hens around, they came from somewhere and the toms will find them. A food plot and some brushy nesting cover would be a lot healthier than releasing some domestic toms.

If you want to raise and release turkeys into the wild, you should raise and release actual wild turkey breeds. In IL that would be Eastern Wild Turkeys. Before you go out and get some, you will need to check with the state fish and game agency. In some states it is illegal to raise wild turkey breeds for any reason, and in most you need a special license from your state's fish and game department. If you do raise wild turkeys keep them as wild as possible until they are released. In other words do not treat them as pets and give them as little human contact as possible.

The best thing is what the others said and improve your habitat. Wild turkey populations are booming right now in most areas. If your habitat will support turkeys they will move into your area. Some areas even have access turkeys and maybe that is the case in IL. Check with your fish and game agency and they might even relocate some pest birds into your area if they feel the habitat will support them.

Ok thanks for ur advice. Ill tell him that it wont be a good idea to get more and to plant some food plots to try to attract more.
