Will a clipped beak grow back

I actually have a question, not an answer, I have a three month old chick with a sever crossbeak that is not growing like our other chicks. The other chicks are three times its size. It greet me happily and seems very energetic. I feed a mush of chick starter feed 3 times a day in a deep dish in addition to the dry starter feed. What else can I do for this chick

you are doing great. you can add some vitamins and boiled yolk.

Yesterday I came home from work for lunch and noticed the outer coating on poor Iris's beak was gone. Her upper beak is now the same length as the lower, but it used to come down over.
Below is a picture of her from the first week of September:

and this is her yesterday. I have no idea what happened to her she's now excluding herself from the flock and appears to be in pain eating or drinking anything, although she did try this morning. I mixed her up a little electrolyte drink last night and fed it to her with a syringe.

Does anyone know if it's going to grow back and how long she will be in pain? What can I give her for pain? I was going to feed her wet oats at lunch with a scrambled egg. What else can I do? No vets around here to look at her..

Looks like a very small break, so likely it will grow back. Usually small ones do ok, if the damage is severe or the soft tissue is damaged sometimes they do not. But most chickens can adapt either way. Often these are from getting the beak caught in something like feeders or waterers or fencing. Just clean it up as best you can if there is any debris in it, veterycin spray is good for this. It probably does hurt so providing her softer feed while it heals will help her eat. You can make a mash of her regular feed by mixing water in to the consistency of thick oatmeal, it will make it easier for her to pick up and also help with hydration. Most birds like their feed made into mash. Raising feeders and waterers up to shoulder height helps so she can scoop with her lower beak. And avoid feeding things on the ground she has to try to peck at for a while. Just monitor her to make sure she stays hydrated most importantly, and is eating. For pain, meloxicam is sometimes prescribed, but you would need a vet. You can use plain old regular strength aspirin, 5 regular tablets dissolved in a gallon of water for up to 3 days, if you had a situation with a lot of bleeding then aspirin could make that worse. Don't use ibuprofen or tylenol or any of those products as they are toxic to chickens. I'm going to give you two links for future reference, one on first aid for chickens and one on broken beaks. Just based on what I can see in the picture I think she will probably be fine.

Just remember oatmeal goes in the 'treats' category and don't over do it.
Just mixing their feed with water by itself usually gets the same response, and if she needs a jump start mixing a bit of treat in can help get her interested. Since she is healing and growing beak, more protein may be beneficial. So you can offer chopped cooked egg, tuna, a teaspoon or so of plain greek yogurt, also for more protein.

Hi, Reurra!

I was wondering what happened with your chicken with the missing top beak? It's now August, 2016. I've just had a terrible accident with a Polish Pullet born earlier this year. Somehow, she managed to get to a rat trap that I had put up out of the way, ready for the evening. Unfortunately, she managed to get to it. I had used cheese which they all love and she probably smelt it. Yes. She got her top beak caught in it. I must've found it just after it had occurred as when I found the plastic rat trap on the ground with what I thought, at first, contained a dog nail. After checking the dogs, no, not them. Then, I saw her standing nearby. Yep! Poor Adora! Right up to her nose! Snapped right off! It was still bleeding. That was how I knew that it had just happened. Swabbed it with Betadine and held it there until it stopped bleeding. Gave her some Rescue Remedy. 1/4 tablet of Panadol. Now, I'm trying to find out whether there's a chance the top beak will grow back. I found one source say it took a year for their chicken to grow her beak back. Another say, that as long as it isn't cauterised, it should grow back. Was yours cauterised?

I'm hoping that she stands a chance for recovery a) She's very healthy; b) Adora's still under a year old (10 mths, I think. I'll have to check.); c) I haven't cauterised the wound. d) I'm mainly at home nowadays so I can handfeed and syringe her water especially whilst it the area is so tender. Poor thing, Adora didn't even complain whilst I tendered her wound. She knew that I was trying to help. I think she was just standing there in shock when I found her.

I'm so very cross with myself for leaving it out in the first place! I should've put it away completely. In a cupboard or something!

Anyway, I'd be interested to hear what happened to your Hen, please?
