I have a few chickens which are being attacked pretty brutally by buffalo flies. I’ve tried all the obvious, I have vanilla i spray on them night and day as well as a fan running in their run. I also have DE in their dust bath and have dusted them with it. The gnats just don’t seem to stop. Would bathing my chickens in tick and flea bath for dogs deter them at all?

I would be afraid to use flea shampoo on a chicken. Do you have any permethrin powder? Or Sevin dust? I don't know if either would repel gnats, but they are deemed safe for chickens. It seems that gnats like my white chicken more than the dark ones. Do you find that? Maybe we should paint the white chickens.

Sorry, theyre nasty things! I use dawn on my dogs and it keeps them at bay but i bet it wouldnt do more than the vanilla

How often do you clean the coop? Just having the feed in there all day is an attractant I've found in addition to moist bedding. I hang sticky traps and transparent sticky tape for windows.

If it's your whole property getting flies you might consider getting one of those solar traps. Otherwise your chickens need an intervention before they get an infection.
