Will a light bulb keep chickens warm in the winter?

Do not put in any heating lamps (like the ones used used for chicks) they can be extremely hot on the surface and set your coop on fire. There are special heaters made for chicken coops that won’t cause fires so look for some of those instead if you decide to add heating to the coops.

I have a few different breeds of chickens, 3 brahmas, cinnamon queen, bard rock, astro, speckled Sussex, sapphire gem, coop does have a draft. No insulation at this time. Do you think its a good idea for a bulb 250 watt red? The low will be -7 here soon.
Cover any sources of drafts… your chickens will appreciate it. Since you don’t have any insulation yet, eliminating the drafts will help. And, leave ventilation near the ceiling open. If you feel that you need any heat, I suggest radiant heat panels. They’re definitely more safe. I have them in all 5 of my buildings. It won’t heat your building, but your chickens have the option to snuggle next to one for some warmth. I don‘t like heat bulbs at all. The risk is too big (in my opinion). I did use some years ago, did everything to secure them, but my issue was opening the door on a zero-degree morning to find that the bulb had exploded inside the protective cage. Tiny pieces of glass were on the bedding under it, and I worried for days that my birds may have ingested some. Fortunately, they were all fine. I’m tagging @Debbie292d, because she uses a safer option as well.
