My chickens are all free range and I have a mother hen parenting 16 baby chicks. They are about two weeks now. She's not top dog,I think there is one hen above her, but she does a good job. So far she's only lost one chick and that was because it got out of the 'chick pen' through a tiny crack and couldn't get back in, so it died.

The rooster I'm looking at is a Light Braham, about 5 months old, and will eat out of your hand.

Will a new rooster kill chicks that are already there like a lion will? He'd be separate for two weeks in quarantine, so the chicks would be 1 month old before he actually met them.. But I'm really nervous. I love my little chickies and feel bad enough already when they get a peck from the one hen during eating.

i hope someone is able to give you first hand advice. i don't own roosters. i would hope that the momma would protect them. we have new chicks and it amazes me how fierce the momma is when protecting them from my other hens.

She will try her best to protect them. That is a lot of chicks for her to take protect. It also matters if the rooster is even interested in them some roosters are some aren't. Hope you get more advice.

I'm not sure about a new rooster but when I hatched some chicks last year from my own rooster,I put the chicks with the older hens and my rooster. He got along famously with them, protecting them and showing them the places to eat,he was definitely a mentor for them!:)
