Yes all chickens should forage for bugs and grass. It comes natural to them. When you free range your birds make sure you don't have any hawks around because they will make a meal out of a free range bird so fast. In my area I had to make a covered run for them that I planted pasture in for them to scratch and peck and eat grass because I have so many hawks that are ALWAYS watching and they ate not very fearful of humans or dogs. In fact I almost lost a bird with me right next to her. Luckily my husband screamed look out and I was able to grab up my bird and the hawk was right behind me.so before you decide to free range completely please check your area for hawks because they can see from miles and swoop down and grab a chicken so fast! If you even see one, I might reconsider free range and build them a safe area that they can forage in. The area would need to be covered to prevent attacks from above. Not much scares a hawk so it's best to protect your chickens BEFORE something bad happens. And once they get one, they will be back for more.so ALWAYS consider your chickens safty when allowing them to free range. Make the decision to free range only if your certain you don't have any preditors. So be mindful of hawks if they are in your area. I have so many of them their is no way I can let my girls free range. I'd loose them all for sure. It's just something to be mindful about when considering free ranging your birds. I really hope this Is helpful for you and wish you the very best! !
