I'm wondering because my daughter has these new banty cochins and they don't seem to be able to eat the pellets very well that we feed all the other chickens. They are around 2 months old now, normally the time we switch over to the pellets. Will I need to feed them crumbles for life? Or will the eventually be able to handle the pellets?

Ok... I guess I'll just wait and see and keep pushing the pellets!

all of my batam cochins eat the pelletsand some hardboiled eggs chopped, for 2 babys (2 months old) and eat the chx starter. for another month then they too will get purina pellets.

give them the choice, pellets or nothing, they will eat pellets, my DeUllcelle, Silkies and Bantam Cochins all eat pellets, All of them would prefer chick crumbles, but I didn't take a survey, and this isnt Burger King eat what your given or go without.

Bantam cochins are probably big enough to eat pellets. They might have to get a little bigger though since at 2months they probably aren't any bigger than my smaller bantams which cannot eat pellets. OEGB are listed on the small end of the bantams along with dutch and japanese. Those 3 would be the ones I'd bet on having trouble with pellets even when full grown.

Thanks everyone, I'm glad to know I won't have to find a 2nd type of feed for just them, specially since I doubt they could even eat a 25lb bags worth in a whole month.

We're going to try emptying out 3/4 of the bag of flock raiser into our storage container for feeding to everyone else, then rolling the bag back up a bit, laying it flat and beating on it for a while!

Hopefully that will help tide them over a month or two until they are bigger.
