if we string barbed wire at the top of a 180 cm chicken run, would it deter a fox from climbing? or would we have to put it half way up? theres too many trees to make a roof.
Thank you!!

A strand of barb wire above field fence is the standard for farms. It deters livestock (cows) from leaning on fences to feed on the other side. It is not much of a solution to prevent climbing predators. I have seen our dogs go over a barbed fence in a flash to chase a deer. Foxes and Coons are crafty. I would add netting or mesh over the top of your run if you cannot do a solid roof.

Do a search on a “fox climbing a fence video”. They are pretty amazing.

I seriously doubt a strand of barbed wire will even slow the fox down no matter where you put it. A roll of concertina wire maybe but not a strand of barbed wire.

It can be expensive but your best bet is a properly installed electric wire.

I haven’t tried it but something else that might work would be to put a horizontal or pretty flat section at the top of your fence maybe 60 cm wide around the outside so the fox would have to hang from it while climbing. No guarantees on that but it’s a method that works for some climbing animals.
