Help.........how can I stop my crazy chicken killing herself!!!!

I have one Japanese bantam hen that went broody nearly 2 months ago!!!! Her eggs hatched but she killed all the chicks just after they dried out - she would not let them go back under her for warmth and pecked their heads.

Other chickens laid more eggs in her nest and she kept brooding on the new ones. 21 days later these hatch and she started killing the chick again (I rescued the rest under another broody hen).

Now she has no eggs but she is still brooding in the nest box. She is SO thin now. I tired to break her by putting her in a wire bottom dog crate for a few days. She goes crazy and keep jumping and trying to get out. After 3 days I let her out and she went straight back to her old nest brooding again!!!!

I tried the crate method again for a week. Again she went back to the nest!

She has turned crazy aggressive and will fly at and bit all the other hens and me even when she is away from the nest. In the crate she injured her wings by flying constantly up and down the bars. She would never settle down. I have never had a hen like this before. She will also chase and try to kill chicks she can see in the run that belong to other hens. She even attacked the rooster!!!!!

What can I do. I think she will die as she has lost so much weight.

Killing chicks and attacking other chickens and people sounds like a recipe for stew, to me.

If the crating didn't work for breaking her, have you tried a cold water bath? Not sure if it'd do any good at this point because she truly does sound like she's cracked.

Try getting a really low cage that is barely enough for her to stand up in, cover it with a beach towel, and keep her filled on food and water. If she pecks you, flick her in the head, if that doesn't work, push her head down and keep her still until she quits fighting. Try doing that for a week or two, if that doesn't work, you just might want to consider chicken for Thanksgiving. (save the turkeys!)
