Will Chicken eat weeds away in coop area

Yes , the chickens will clear out the area themselves faster than you would ever dream of .

My run is totally clear of all grass now and NOW I catch myself pulling grass and throwing into the run area and they go nuts when i do so . they jump over each other to catch and eat the grass . Infact , I even asked my lawn servie to MOW close to run so grass clipping can fly inside . They all standing there waiting for the clippings .... Its to cute . WISH Lawn serve had a grass catcher so they could actually dump the clipping inside . LOL

My run is 12x32 and was totally grass free in less than a week of putting chickens in that area .

i swap homemade vension jerky or smoked fish with the local grass service guys my DH fishes with and they throwtruckloads of fresh cut grass my way, just drive in and dump it. i fork it into the runs, or use it towards next years gardens in the compost bins.

also, the electric and cable guys dump woodchips
when they have gone thru and trimmed trees.

with the cost of trucking it & dumping at the landfills, tree and utility company's will usually dump their load locally if they can, saves their time & fuel.

course it helps to turn on the charm and buy 'em coffee once and a while too...anything for my chicks!!

Thanks for the replies and the great idea about contacting landscaping / mowing companies for their waste.

I love this place it full of great ideas, but it its a bit addicting and I don't even have chickens yet.

What in the world are you waiting for? You can pick up a watermelon box, feeders and waterers, a heat lamp and you are good for 5 weeks, longer if the chicks are not in your bedroom or kitchen!

Nothing like 5 week olds to inspire coop/run construction. I should know, 5 week old chicks in the kichen, coop/run 75% built and the hottest weekend in San Diego yet this year and we got it finished. 12 noon the chicks were in the run portion and we finished the coop at 8 pm. But we had reached the point of no return.

Today, the Delightful Dozen are 12 weeks old and enjoying the heck out of the coop/run and the 3-4 hours of "yard time" they have in the evenings.

So, get those chicks, nothing like pressure to get a project completed! Join the club!

Edited to add: the watermelon box is the for the brooder! And get busy! There are chickens in your future.

1. Add a muscovy duckling and the flies will be gone, and

2. I use those portable dog pens (the round ones) to allow my babies to eat various parts of the lawn every day...just like a portable run.

3. CAREFUL about other peoples' lawn clipping in case they have chemicals on their grass!!!
