will chickens lay without having a coop?

We have the coop base up about 2.5 feet off the ground and totally fenced in. That is where we put them at night so they are safe. I am betting they are laying under the porch. I would have thought I would have eggs by now. Our duck house is a dog house with corn cobb bedding in it and 2 ping pong balls. I am hoping they start laying in there. It wold be a whole lot easier to get to
