I had 16 chicks, then that night the raccons or something ate 11 of them and left 5 bodies around the coop.
and they kept coming over for more. so i wondering how to BLOCK them off?
I have a german shepherd that loves my chickens, she chased something off lastnight.
I asked my friends and parents how to keep them off.
they didnt sure how.
what does raccoons HATE the scents?
Thanks!

My dog hears EVERYTHING, so if he barks at night, I KNOW something is out there. He love my chickens... Well, he would LOVE to eat them lol. He has a philosophy ... If anything is gonna eat them, he THINKS it's gonna be him.

do you know how they're getting into the coop? Is it chicken wire or a door with a simple latch? I agree with trapping them... or making sure your coop is secure.

My LGD also keeps me informed if anything is out of the ordinary. She goes crazy and sets my indoor dogs off which in tern wakes me up. Never had a raccoon issue. Those buggers are EVIL!

I wish my dog wouldn't act aggressive towards my flock. I don't even trust him with my back door open and my security door closed. I let him out when the ducks and chickens are locked up tight in their run.

I'm sorry to hear this :(

My girl has only shown playfulness in regards to the poultry, and never aggression. Playfulness can be deadly as well though :(

First, you need to make certain that the coop is completely closed at night time. No openings, doors with locks. All holes covered with hardware cloth, or boarded up at night. If you have a run, consider a hot wire that you turn on at night when the birds are all up to roost, and off in the morning when you let them out for the day.
Second, you need to set a trap. Personally a Duke's dog proof coon trap is my choice.. If you use a hav-a-hart style trap, be sure to anchor it very, very well. Some larger coons can get out of them, and when they figure that out, they will not use it again. BUT, when you do catch one, shoot it, shovel a hole and bury it, and shut up. Relocating is visiting your problem on some one else, and can be a cruelty to the animal you've relocated.

If you can not shoot it, my grandfather drowns them. We can't fire a gun, and don't have one to fire. I am just relaying this option if you don't as well. Do not dump the raccoon anywhere near a farm if you plan on relocating. I have heard of a friend relocating to a dump that was nowhere near farms/homes. The raccoon would have lots to eat and wouldn't be a threat to nearby homes.

I personally would call my grandpa
