will eggs be buried in deep litter?

I haven't lost any standard size eggs, but the banty eggs blend right in with the wood shavings. I've started running my hands through the nest shavings just to make sure I get them all.

I just moved my girls into a large trailer coop with lots of shavings for the winter and they wont lay in the boxes they layed in before the move. they are laying in the back corners and burying the eggs in the shavings so I'm on a treasure hunt daily for eggs but Im glad they havent been pooping back there they do that in the front of coop near door so easy cleaning. I tryed putting there milk crates they used to lay in back in the corners but it didnt work they layed them in the shavings between the crates and buried them.I'm thinking maybe this is good they wont freeze as easy. I need to build the nest boxes into the wall where I can open the lid from the outside and fetch the eggs and then pray they will use them

Put the new nest boxes in today and found 3 hidden eggs!

I have found that they will sometimes make a "nest" out of the litter. But I go into the coop rooms 2-4 times a day and look everywhere so I usually find them right away.

I'm in there two or three times a day, too, especially with these temperatures - the eggs will freeze if they're not collected fairly quickly. Thank goodness it's going to warm up a bit this week!

Concerning the baby moniter.
My Hens were making that bwack sound for a couple weeks (I was so concerned about it I posted to find out why under ""creepy hen") and no eggs.
Then today, out of the blue, my mom heard some squaking that distinctly sounded different then their usual noises, and then what she described as a very self satisfied cackle. She told me to check because she thought one laid an egg. She has no chicken experiance and these are my first birds but I humored her and went to check.
Sure enough, there was an egg.
I wouldn't worry until you hear that cackle and you will most likely recognize it when you hear it.

Edited to add: Also I have deep litter and have not finished the nest boxes yet. It was in a little hollowed out area seperated from the main area and because I heard the sound I saw it before it had a chance to get lost.

I accidentally found eggs buried in the pine shavings (I use the DLM also) when I happened to see the very end of one sticking out one day. I don't know that they purposely bury their eggs, I think it happens because they do so much scratching and throwing shavings around.

Now, I take a shovel or rake and gently turn over the shavings just in case there are eggs under there.

no worries Sylvie - I've wondered the same thing. My girls just started laying this week and thankfully, all eggs have been found in the nest box.
Good luck! Patience pays off - that first egg is a treasure!

I don't think they're buried by accident. I've watched my hens sit in the nest box and pull bits of straw out from underneath themselves and toss it over their shoulders in an attempt to cover the eggs. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the hens who lay in the litter are doing the same thing - it's just easier to hide eggs in litter than up in nest boxes.
