I had an English Mastiff. She was the absolute best dog I've ever had. I had ducks and chickens and a Maltese puppy. The puppy would crawl all over my mastiff, chew on her ears, etc and my mastiff would just look at her like she was nuts. She never really acknowledged the chickens or ducks were there. Never once tried to chase them etc. She was however, extremely protective ,of myself and my little girl. Especially my little girl. If I ever raised my voice or anything else she would walk over to my daughter and sit or stand directly in front or over her and just stare. She was just shy of 200lbs and extremely intimidating to strangers. If someone new came to the house she always made sure she was between me and them until I told her it was ok. I didn't train her to be that way. That's just how she ended up. She was extremely gentle towards kids and any small animals but she damn sure new how big and strong she was and made strangers very well aware of it. They are an amazing breed of dog but you definitely need to make sure they know you are the boss and not them. Just be very strict, stern, and consistent, and you will have a incredible friend, protector, and lap dog 😂😂😂
