I am just thinking,
if we keep taking their eggs, but the natural instinct is to brood and maybe mate?

They will treat you like a roo in the absense of one...they will want extra attention from you all of the time, even squat when you pet them! You are their roo...

Mine are friendlier and seem happier without their roo. Think it was kind of like freeing them from an abusive relationship. He wasn't very nice, lol. They seem to enjoy the single life.

Mine are also happier without a roo. We had one for a short time and he constantly harassed them. They actually started pecking each other when I didn't have this problem prior to getting a roo. After he left they were much happier, and the pecking stopped.

Depends on how nice the rooster is to the hens. Ours acted like a rapist who pecked hens he didn't like on the roost. He would make sure he helped himself to the food first. He initially was more of a gentleman initially, then devolved into a cretin bird. Not all roosters act like that. But with a rooster acting like that, the hens will never be as happy as when they were single. I myself think the rooster is often a good bodyguard for the hens..but he needs to be nice to the girls at the same time..not like what I was describing above.

My roo was mean to my girls so he isn't around anymore. My girls are happier and they love my husband and I so much more now. They love the attention and my husband always gives them a snack everytime they come to the front porch. It's so cute!
