Will I be able to have friendly chickens?

In my limited experience, I'd say that their behavior can change radically, and I imagine spending time with them later will work fine, especially if you can get one tame now to be a role model. My most skittish one, a 4 week old Easter Egger, this week flew out of the cage and landed on top of my head, after my lap filled with her buddies and the emptying cage seemed more scary than I did!

Only one now has not ventured out onto the scary person, another EE. And I have done no treat bribery. Yet. I expect that will turn the tide on the holdout.

Thanks everyone. My animals have always been well behaved and friendly, but I have never had chickens. For example, once in a while my horse gets out of his pasture. It's very difficuly to catch him;) ..you just head towards him-if he isn't already headed your way- and then just tell him to "come on" and he follws us wherever we ask him to go LOL.
The chicks do seems to really enjoy seeing what's going on. They come right over to the screen and everyone stops and talks to them. I had brought them upstairs Sunday to hang out in the playard with my kids. The "skittish" one flew up on top of the cage and then onto my shoulder. I let her ride there up the stairs with a gentle hand above her and she seemed quite content to sit there. I'm glad to know I can make up the time and they are still young enough. Now I have to get back to taxes...
