I've got all of mine separated by breed. More for breeding purposes than anything else, but the pasture is much more peaceful now. When I add new pullets, there's always a squabble but it doesn't seem to last long.

The bonus of being a farm is the space to do that. I either choose one or 2 compatible breeds & stick with that or mix & match & take my chances. I'm fairly hands on with things like food though or my Rocks & Aussies would keep everyone else away from all the food. The double run also gives lots of options so I have made it work but I have to agree with Shadrach ~Chickens are xenophobic. They really only like their own species ~ or very similar!I've got all of mine separated by breed. More for breeding purposes than anything else, but the pasture is much more peaceful now. I broke a cardinal rule last time I bought because my breeder wouldn't/couldn't sell me 2 each of 2 breeds I was interested in & I let my heart rule my head. It is working but my head was right! This is me, too. We don't have a farm (yet!) but we do have a big, gorgeous acre with a mini orchard, two large grassy yards, berry thickets, natural stream and small pond and several groupings of large mature trees.
I have enough space to have lots of types of chickens and the level of crazy necessary to insert myself into their feeding and chicken politics![]()
