It has an injury on its behind but I'm not sure what happened. It had a sad looking bottom when I brought it home a couple of days ago which is why it was a freebie. It had a very pasty vent and the area above and below its vent was very swollen (it now has the largest chick vent I have ever seen - looks like an egg layer). Yesterday it pooped a very small amount of blood twice (yes - keeping track of the fecal matter is important right now) and even though it's a white chick its whole bottom end looked like a giant purple bruise!! Do you think it could have been grabbed by an adult or something? Its vent was weeping a tiny amount of clear fluid. Even though it was a free baby I have grown very attached to it and I do believe that it is frizzled serama (very curly wing feathers).
When I brought it home I washed its hind end and it took the biggest chick poo I had ever seen, but I have never seen pasty vent cause skin to turn purple or cause a weepy vent. It was a huddled sad baby, but I've been giving it medicated chick food (turned into powder by my magic bullet) and antibiotics in its drinking water. It also has white sand with its food and I have been cleaning its hind end every hour or two. It acts perky, eats, socializes with the other babies, and is starting to play with the others and is expressing curiosity, which is a great sign. It carries its wings down and kind of fluffed out at its sides, but makes happy chick noises. Even though its vent is large and it has a tiny amount of swelling between its vent and its tail, it no longer has anywhere near the amount of swelling that it had yesterday. It looks normal other than the spot between its tail and vent (the tail was fused to the vent on the ride home - separated it with warm water and a lot of patience)
Please tell me what I can do for it. Will he/she make it? My husband keeps telling me to not get too attached to it, but it's already too late for that. I can't help it. Do you think it could have hemorrhaged something internal? It hasn't had any blood in the droppings today - completely normal, not sticky, no signs of sickness at all in the baby chickie.
Thank you for reading!
