So we've had chickens a few years now and decided we want to also have ducks. We just purchased some Rouen ducklings yesterday. Now my question is, will our cat attack them once their adults? I know to keep them out of reach now while they're babies, but what about when they're full grown? Our cat is about 15lbs and is a little larger than your average cat. We plan to let them free range next summer. Any help would be appreciated thanks!

Depends on your cat, but I will never let them together, unsupervised.

Our cat doesn't attack our chickens. In the beginning he attempted and freaked out when they all scattered around him. If the ducks are free ranging, there's no way to guarantee that they won't be alone with the cat. He LOVES to be outside. I heard Rouen ducks are larger than average ducks, almost like small geese. If they are the same size as chickens, or bigger, will that maybe deter him?

Depends on the cat.
We have a cat and have had as many as two on the property at a time. Neither ever hurt a chick or adult chicken. The remaining cat intermixes with the chicks once they're about 2-3 months old, and we will leave her with access to them at 4-5 months of age.
Once the birds are fully grown, we have no concerns whatsoever. Again, depends on the cat...

Slim chance your cat would bother a duck since it doesn't bother your chickens but foxes and coyotes love to ea them .If you don't put a pen around their water and an electric fence you may not be able to keep them.I 've raised 100 chickens, geese ducks and peafowls around dozens of cats with zero attacks.I did lose every duck.

Yes, we've got foxes and coyotes around here, but their coop is very predator proof. We only let them free range when we are home. Also our dog has become quite a good watch dog. He's a St. Bernard mix and is alert with anything our of the ordinary. He's chased off a few foxes and stays alert for quite awhile after they've left.
It's reassuring though that most likely our cat won't hurt our ducks once they're full grown :fl

My ducks flew away and I never saw them again.I should have cut their wings sooner...Its not likely they survived on their own so I won't make that mistake again. That was a long time ago...

Oh that sucks! These won't fly away because they are going to be very big ducks once they're fully grown. Rouen ducks are too heavy in the carriage to fly

Cats have different personalities, I know two cats that would attack ducks both in a playful manner if they where to be introduced to them but that playful manner would prob injure the birds. And I know another cat that we have he doesn't want anything to do with the chickens and would steer clear of ducks too I assume.

The breed of cat and age can help to know aswell possibly. So all up there four cats I have in the close relations around me, two of them would attack playfully, the other one is too old he was once the most hardcore cat but his old now an got hit by a car and just wants to relax these days U know, he avoids chickens for the most part even but still catched mice n rats. The other cat is to timid and wouldn't hurt ducks. Two that would attack in playful way are British short hair cats.. the old one whose tough but can't be botherd is a typical domestic house cat, tabby, and the timid one is a long haired Russian Blue.

Ours is 5 yrs old and a long haired white and orange cat. He loves hunting, but attempted to attack our chickens, until he realized how big they were lol. So he leaves them alone
