Will my chickens freeze??!!

It's currently -4F here and my chickens are outside scratching, eating and drinking. It was -21F last night when they were in the coop. Is your coop ventilated? There is something wrong if you lost chickens. Reds are considered cold hearty and I've had leghorns which are warm weather birds all winter here before with no problems but losing comb points to frostbite.

To clarify I don't insulate or heat but provide adequate ventilation and dry litter/bedding.


Edit: OK, read all of your first post and see you don't have a sheltered coop or a tarp wrapped wind break on prevailing winter wind sides of run.

I don't have Rhode Island Reds but was of the understanding that they can handle very cold weather. How old were they? What type of coop were they in?

Just trying to figure out why the cold took them as it appears that breed does well in frigid weather.

Our temps are about to drop dramatically. I have an enclosed coop with adequate ventilation but not insulated. Pine shavings on floor. Have 10 hens that are 6 months old. They are not acclimated to this cold of weather. Going to be low teens with wind chills in single digits tomorrow night and next. Should I be worried. Only in 40's tonight. So it's going to be a shock to them.

Well the first post with the pictures weren't my pictures. I have an enclosed coop.
I don't really understand what happened, like I said it was enclosed, and I do feel awful for what happened but I'm giving it another try. Hope all goes much much better. I dont have an issue now but ill post in the appropriate set of posts.
