Will my ducks need grit?

We are going to use gravel topped with several inches of sand in the duck pen. Will the ducks still need grit? Is sand coarse enough? They will have some free-range time in the backyard so will be able to doodle in the dirt as well.

With the sand in the pen, and the dirt in the yard while they are free-ranging, they should not need additional grit.
