The mother hen usually finds a spot to raise the chicks close to the others and mixes them but protects them from the other hens/rooster. I have had one hen raise her brood outside the hen house in the barn but within 8 feet of the feeding area where everyone mingles daily. Another hen kept her chic away for a month and then one day started sleeping inside the hen house with everyone and the chick followed. Grew up with the flock, no issues. Both sets of momma hens did well and chicks were accepted from hatch to maturity.
