Hi,
I have Orpingtons (most colors) and they are all about a yr old and lay a medium size egg. I know they are said to lay between a medium and large egg. I am just wondering if they were going to lay a large egg would they be doing that by now??

Thanks

I noticed that my buff orps started to appear larger and started to lay much larger eggs in their second year. Now they are almost three and their eggs are between a large and extra large size. Hope this helps.

My girls are about 7-8 months old and their eggs have progressively gotten larger. Mine are all BOs. I would say I am getting a LARGE egg right now. I recently got some hatching eggs from Speckledhen and her girls are laying HUGE eggs....so big that I thought the turner might have trouble with them...they barely sat in it. I would say yours will be getting bigger with time.

Some of the Exhibition line Orpingtons do not lay much more then a medium size eggs. I have some Blacks, one is from more of a production oriented line. She lays huge eggs. The other two hens I have that lay aren't even close. All are about a year. And I am told one's eggs won't get much bigger. The other sometimes lay a decent size. But, depending on the lines you have, that will tell what the breeders of your line were going after.
