Will my quail survive? Any ideas?

You do need to find a vet that knows birds. I wouldn't take a quail to a general vet, but there are vets that specialize in different animals. My cats go to a practice that sees nothing but cats. My chinchillas go to a vet that specializes in pocket pets and other small animals. Finding one that knows birds may be a challenge, but it can be done.

Even the specialists here e.g. for chicken and other poultry for farmer often do not know quails.
And they are already rare.

I agree. That's why I've been learning as much as I can so I can do basic treatment myself. It helps that for me they're livestock, so while I care for them, I'm not very attached to them. It would be a different story if it were one of my cats.

Same with me.
Also, as I am eating the eggs, I am absolutly against antibiotics.

So sorry your girl is not well, Claire. The only thing I know to do for birds when they're ill is to keep them warm and hydrated. I'm sure you're already doing that.
Hope she's feeling better soon.

Thanks Steve :)

i'm not an expert but maybe you can observe your birds to see when they eat and drink and try giving your little bird food and water then. try to keep to a schedule kind of so that she's not starving or dehydrated. If she doesn't eat you can mix the food with the water to give her nutrients. When one of our bird was injured he was depressed and wouldn't eat. We gave him food in his water and he got really skinny. but we tried giving him bugs. He ate those.
i hope your bird gets better soon! :fl

Hi KaLe dA QuAiL,
Thanks, I too hope she gets better.

She would not take the mealworms but is eating the ground up the food I use for the chicks. She is drinking and pooping fine. She is quite a heavy well-fed lady - so hopefully this will see her through a few days of light food.

Her alertness and eating/drinking is so at odds with her inability to stand. I am leaning towards an internal injury of some sort.

Poor little bird :(. Have you checked her joints? Do they feel normal or enlarged and hot to the touch? I don't really think it is gout, she is too young for that. But you never know.

Hi Pandaisy,

All suggestions are welcome. I just checked her over and all her joint seem normal. her underbelly is a bit warm - but she has been snuggled in my jumper.
