So I am looking at getting just a few quail hens for eggs, maybe five or so.
I went to Tractor Supply today to look around and started talking to one of the employees. He told me that quail will not lay very well if kept in a rabbit hutch, even one with an attached run, because it does not simulate their natural environment well enough. He said they need access to a large area with tall grass and maybe a tree stump etc. in order to lay well.
From what I have read online in forums and such, this is not necessarily true.
What are your opinions, experiences?
I can not get chickens at this time since we live in a neighborhood with covenants, which forbid any poultry or livestock. Quail are considered game birds, so if anyone does find out, that is how I am planning on getting around the "law"... Plus, they will be my pets...
Our next door neighbors are fine with it, but chickens might get too noisy when laying and I don't want anyone else finding out.
Thanks for any input!
