be weird?

I got 7 of them about two weeks ago. They are huge wimps and try to run/fly away even when I feed them. They just seem afraid of everything. Normal behaviour?

This is my first experience with them. I had never even seen one in real life before I picked them up. Aliens is just about right for my little weirdos!

Yes, they are wierdos!

Mine were all hand-raised and handled a lot, but none are tame. I can't get within 5ft of them now

I have 9 keets, all 4 weeks old and they're all scaredy cats too.

I'm super-impressed, Cyn! Those are the tamest guineas I've ever seen. Mine are totally convinced I'm going to snatch them up and drop them in an acid vat...

HUMMMMMMMMMMM.....well, I always hear they are "different" always cautious......so maybe that is normal?

We are hoping to get a few guinea chicks in a week...... interesting to think HOW they will be as they grow!!!!

Good luck, and I think in time, they will ease up a bit.

I think "cautious" is the word for describing guineas

Up to a certain age (About 7 weeks I think) the guinea keets will most likely freak out and huddle in a corner whenever they see anything walk by their brooder. I have 7 which are 9 weeks old and some of them come right up to my hand when I reach into the brooder. But yet I have 2 4 week old keets which still freak whenever they see me!!

My adult guineas come very close to us. They are not scared to walk right infront of us. We can occasionally sneak a pet in here and there, but the guineas won't let us catch and hold them. (Well, we probably could if we really wanted to.)

speckledhen, I am amazed you could get your guineas to sit on your lap! Then again with lots of time and patience what can't be accomplished? (Beautiful guineas by the way)

CrazyFowl, just give your guineas time to grow up and soon they will trust you more. Maybe not enough to let you pet or hold them, but soon they will know you bring the food and they'll come running to great you.

How in the world did you get them sooo tame??

My adult hen, Guiness, doesn't run from me (unless I try to touch her) but I have NEVER seen a guinea on someone's lap! Thats amazing

I do miss the little goonie-birds. My DH actually adored them, as you can tell from the pic, which surprised the heck out of me. They became really mean to my RIR girls, for some unknown reason, and I had to make a choice between keeping them or my chickens. I'd like to have them again some day, though.

If they are raised with chickens that usually helps, but if not, giving them treats daily will help get them so they will not run away from you. Try millet, they love it!
